Alex Zanardi passed away on the evening of Friday, May 1, 2026, in Bologna, Italy, at the age of 59.
The Official Cause of Death
As of May 2, 2026, the family has not released a specific medical cause of death. In an official statement, they announced that Alex died “peacefully” and “suddenly,” surrounded by his loved ones.
While the exact clinical cause remains private, it is widely attributed to the long-term, fragile health state resulting from his catastrophic injuries in June 2020. During a handbike relay in Tuscany, Zanardi collided with a truck, suffering severe cranial and facial trauma. Though he survived and eventually returned home in late 2021, he required constant medical care and intensive rehabilitation for the nearly six years leading up to his passing.
A Legacy of Courage
Zanardi’s death occurred on the 32nd anniversary of Ayrton Senna’s passing, a coincidence noted by many in the motorsport community. He is being remembered globally as a “champion of life” for his ability to reinvent himself after two life-altering tragedies:
2001 (The Lausitzring Crash): A horrific CART racing accident in Germany led to the amputation of both his legs.
The Paralympic Era: He became a global icon for disability sport, winning four Paralympic gold medals and two silver medals in handcycling at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games.
Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni and the International Paralympic Committee have led the tributes, honoring him as a man who “turned every challenge into a lesson in strength and dignity.”
