Police and emergency responders were at the scene of a shooting in the King Field neighborhood of South Minneapolis late Friday night, May 1, 2026. The incident occurred at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, located at 4055 Nicollet Avenue.
The Incident
Time and Dispatch: Around 8:38 p.m., Minneapolis Park Police received a call regarding a “suspicious person” and a large gathering of young adults in the park’s parking lot.
The Shooting: While officers were en route, multiple gunshots were fired. Upon arrival, police found several victims and a chaotic scene.
Victims and Injuries
Four people were injured in the gunfire:
Critical Injury: A 19-year-old woman was shot (reports indicate a wound to the neck or chest) and was transported by ambulance to Hennepin Healthcare (HCMC) with serious, life-threatening injuries.
Other Victims: Three additional individuals suffered gunshot wounds. These individuals “self-transported” to local hospitals before or shortly after police arrived. Their current conditions and ages have not yet been released.
Investigation and Search for Suspects
No Arrests: As of Saturday afternoon, May 2, no suspects are in custody. Police have not released a description of the shooter or shooters.
Joint Investigation: The Minneapolis Park Police are leading the investigation with assistance from the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD).
Ongoing Response: The park and surrounding blocks were cordoned off for several hours as investigators processed ballistic evidence.
