The Illinois State Police (ISP) is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place late Wednesday night in the 6500 block of South Champlain Avenue.
The Incident: At approximately 10:50 p.m., ISP officers responded to a call regarding domestic battery. Upon arrival, they encountered an armed individual.
The Confrontation: A struggle ensued between the officers and the suspect, during which shots were fired. The suspect was struck by gunfire and later pronounced deceased at a local hospital.

Release of Video in Officer Krystal Rivera Case (April 17, 2026)
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) released bodycam footage on Friday related to the “unintentional” shooting death of Chicago Police Officer Krystal Rivera by her partner, Officer Carlos Baker.
Context: The shooting occurred on June 5, 2025, during a foot pursuit in the Chatham neighborhood. A court order previously blocked the release of this footage until late March 2026.
Controversy: Attorneys for the Rivera family have criticized the release, accusing COPA of providing “curated” and incomplete footage. Officer Baker remains under investigation for the discharge of his weapon.
Update on Shooting Near 8100 S. Merrill (April 9, 2026)
COPA recently provided an update on a February 2026 incident involving a pursuit of a stolen vehicle.
Details: Officers chased a suspect into a yard near 8100 S. Merrill. As the suspect attempted to climb a fence while holding a firearm, an officer discharged their weapon.
Outcome: No one was struck by the gunfire, and a juvenile was taken into custody. COPA is currently reviewing whether the use of force aligned with department policy.
Other Recent Police Activity
South Side Security Incident: Early Saturday, April 18, a woman was shot during a fight with a security guard (not a CPD officer) in the 600 block of East 75th Street. The guard is a registered FOID/CCL holder and is cooperating with detectives.
Transparency Measures: The Chicago Police Department and COPA remind the public that all officer-involved shootings resulting in injury or death are subject to a mandatory 60-day video release policy, unless otherwise restricted by a court order.
Contact COPA: Anyone with information or independent video footage of these incidents is encouraged to contact the Civilian Office of Police Accountability at 312-746-3609 or visit ChicagoCOPA.org.
