The Prince George’s County Police Department has officially charged Larry James Simpson, a 68-year-old man from Glen Burnie, Maryland, with 66 criminal offenses following a violent rampage involving multiple shootings and carjackings across the northern part of the county on Friday afternoon, May 15, 2026.

The charges against Simpson include 16 counts of attempted first-degree murder and 16 counts of attempted second-degree murder, alongside a variety of related firearm and assault charges.

Timeline of the Crime Spree
The multi-city rampage unfolded rapidly over the course of Friday afternoon across five distinct locations:

2:30 PM | College Park (5100 block of Pierce Avenue): Police received initial calls regarding a man pointing an AR-15-style long gun out of a car window. Witnesses reported he fired several shots, though no injuries occurred at this first scene.

Riverdale (Riverdale Road at the BW Parkway): Shortly after, Simpson targeted a moving vehicle, firing a round through the window. The 64-year-old driver sustained head lacerations from shattered glass but was not directly struck by the gunfire.

Riverdale (Kenilworth Avenue and Good Luck Road): Simpson abandoned the Nissan, shot at a female driver, and carjacked her Toyota. The woman escaped without physical injury.

Greenbelt (9000 block of Edmonston Road): In the final leg of the spree, the suspect attempted to carjack a Honda.

An Off-Duty Tracking and Arrest
The rapid resolution of the spree was heavily aided by an unarmed, off-duty Prince George’s County Police officer who happened to witness one of the carjackings while driving his personal vehicle.

The off-duty officer began trailing Simpson at a safe distance while calling his wife—who is also a PGPD officer. She immediately relayed the suspect’s real-time coordinates to active-duty units and regional law enforcement networks.

When Simpson arrived at the final location in Greenbelt, he noticed the trailing vehicle and fired directly at the off-duty officer, who was not hit. Moments later, active units converged on the scene. With the assistance of three United States Park Police officers, Simpson was successfully disarmed and taken into custody. An AR-15-style rifle was recovered at the scene.
