The community of Washington, Pennsylvania, and animal welfare advocates across the region are mourning the sudden passing of Cathy Cunningham, a dedicated and fearless humane society officer.

A Champion for the Voiceless
Cathy Cunningham was widely recognized as a “guardian angel” for animals in Washington County. She was the founder of the non-profit organization C.R.I.C.A.A.T. (Center for Research, Investigation, and Control of Animal Abuse and Torture) and spent over 15 years on the front lines of animal rescue.

Unwavering Dedication: Cathy was known for her “24/7” commitment to animal welfare. For many years, she worked as a volunteer humane officer, often responding to emergency calls in the middle of the night and funding rescues out of her own pocket when official budgets fell short.

High-Profile Rescues: She was instrumental in several major operations, including a 2019 raid in Hopewell Township that rescued nearly 100 dogs from horrific conditions. She famously stated that while the work was emotionally draining, she couldn’t turn her back on an animal in need.

Advocacy: Beyond physical rescues, Cathy was a vocal advocate for better funding and legislative support for humane officers in Pennsylvania, frequently petitioning county commissioners to prioritize animal safety.

Details of Her Passing
Sudden Loss: Her passing in early May 2026 has been described as sudden and unexpected, sending shockwaves through the local community and the many animal shelters she partnered with.

Cause of Death: While the specific medical cause has not been released to the public, her family and colleagues have noted that she passed away peacefully.

A “Humane” Legacy: Those who worked alongside her remember her as “tough as nails” when facing animal abusers, but incredibly soft-hearted when it came to the creatures in her care.

Community Tributes
Since the news broke, the Washington Area Humane Society and various local rescues have posted heartfelt tributes:

“Cathy was a force of nature. There wasn’t a barn she wouldn’t enter or a situation she wouldn’t face to save a life. Washington County is a darker place without her light.”

Memorial Fund: In honor of her life’s work, a memorial fund has been set up through C.R.I.C.A.A.T. to continue her mission of investigating animal cruelty and providing emergency care for seized animals.

Funeral Information
Visitation: A public visitation will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at a funeral home in Washington, PA.

Service: A “Celebration of Life” is planned for Sunday, May 10. In a fitting tribute to her passion, the family has welcomed well-behaved, leashed pets to attend the outdoor portion of the memorial.

Cathy Cunningham leaves behind a legacy of thousands of animals saved and a community inspired to continue her work. She is being remembered with the words often found on her own social media: “Until they all have a home.”
