Alex Zanardi passed away peacefully on the evening of Friday, May 1, 2026, in Bologna, Italy, at the age of 59.
The Official Cause of Death
As of May 2, 2026, the family has not provided a specific medical cause of death in their official statement. They simply shared that he died “suddenly” and “peacefully, surrounded by the affection of those closest to him.”
However, it is widely understood that his death followed years of severe health complications resulting from his most recent major accident:
The 2020 Crash: In June 2020, Zanardi suffered catastrophic cranial and facial injuries when his handbike collided with a truck during a relay event in Tuscany.
A Fragile Recovery: Although he returned home in late 2021 after 18 months in the hospital and numerous surgeries, he remained in a fragile state, continuing intensive rehabilitation out of the public eye for nearly six years.
